The Real Reasons Your Dog Eats Grass

Does your dog eat so much grass that you're debating whether you adopted a horse or a dog? If so, you're probably wondering why and if it's acceptable. That's a perfectly acceptable concern. We're going to talk about that a bit today.

Dogs Eating Grass: Instincts

You've probably heard of the basic instinctive reaction for a dog eating grass. The dog eats grass due to a stomach ache. The dog vomits the grass. Back in the day, if a dog had an upset stomach, her body automatically assumed she had eaten an item she was not supposed to. That triggered the instinct of eating grass as grass helps the dog to vomit.

How Does Grass Cause Dogs to Vomit?

The mass of grass in a dog's stomach (once eaten) combines with the 'bad stuff' in your dog's belly. This irritates the stomach even more resulting in her throwing up all the 'yuckies' in there.

The Misconception of Dogs and Grass De-Bunked

The instinct of eating grass due to an upset stomach isn't the only reason for your dog eating grass.

Sometimes, your dog eats grass out of boredom or just because it tastes good at the time. How could grass taste good? Don't ask us here at Canine Companions, we don't particularly like the taste of grass.

Grass may also fill some type of nutritional deficiency, like the need for fiber, to aid in digestion. So, it's a bit similar as it has to do with the digestive system, but different because the dog isn't eating grass due to an upset stomach but rather the body's instinct of telling your dog's mind the body doesn't have the nutrients it needs.

Amber Drake, the CEO of Canine Companions, wrote an article regarding the dangers of eating grass with the DogCancerBlog. You can find an excerpt from her article below (to read the article in full click here)

"Even if you don’t use pesticides, your neighbors (or the local government) might.
Your dog loves to walk through the park, roll in the grass, and you may even notice him eating the grass.
If that grass has been sprayed with glyphosate, or worse, glyphosate and 2,4-D together, that means your dog is walking through it, rolling in it, eating it, and breathing it.
When glyphosate is consumed, it can cause a range of serious effects in dogs including:
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Anorexia
If you see these symptoms after your dog eats grass, make sure to mention that fact to your veterinarian.
There still isn’t an abundant amount of research about how pesticides affect our dogs specifically. But, there has been some research published about pesticides and humans.
Dogs are mammals like us. And they’re often much smaller. So, you can only imagine what damage pesticides do to their little bodies.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, when exposed to 2,4-D in the short-term, you might become weak and lethargic, go into a kind of stupor, have muscle twitches, and/or experience convulsions.
Those who are exposed to 2,4-D for a long period of time might see damage to all of their organs. Long-term exposure to 2,4-D may result in cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease, skin disease and/or neuropathy.
The signs might not be immediate, the symptoms could be seen years after exposure.
Even the pesticide label warns us (as humans) not to get any on our skin, or in our eyes, and encourages the use of gloves while using it.
Which sort of begs the question: given all of this, why is it okay for us to still use pesticides that contain glyphosate or 2,4-D? And, how is a new strain of chemicals being released that are equally or more dangerous to life on Earth?"
Pesticides can be extremely frightening. And we'd rather be safe than sorry. If you want to learn more, click on the link to read the article. At the bottom of the article, there is also a list of additional resources for you to dig a bit deeper.
